Leaves reached up and shook his hair with his fingers. Sure enough, leaves and dirt fell to the counter. “Look what you did.

Bitch.”

“Dude,” Evan jumped in. “I’m eating.”

“Sorry, Flood.”

“Quit your bitching,” Burns scolded.

Evan still didn’t have a read on Burns. If Dixon trusted him, then there had to be something about him there that none of the others saw.

He wore special gloves and kept his distance from everyone else, a telltale sign that he didn’t trust his powerful fire element. Or maybe it was his temper, which always seemed to spark a call from him. It made Evan wonder what had happened to him in the past for him to still not have full control over his call.

Burns looked around and snarled before lifting his gloved hands.

“I for one would like to have a bit more control over my call.”

Char walked over to Burns and stood there looking up at him with those enormous brown eyes. “Will you work with me today, Burns?”

He smiled and brushed her hair from her face. “Of course, sweetheart.”

From the day Burns showed up at the Farm, he’d taken a protective stance over Char, like a big brother. He was the only one she’d say more than a few words to. Like-kind callers, Evan concluded, connected on a different level.

Dixon had explained it to him once, and with Char and Burns, it made perfect sense. Burns looked like he was ready to burst into flames. Char looked as innocent and gentle as a candle’s flame.

Together the two balanced each other out. With Char, Burns seemed to be able to control his call a bit better. And with Burns, Char actually spoke in complete sentences. Almost.

He stole a glance at Pipe, the only other water caller still living at the Farm. He grabbed Char’s plate and held his hand out to rinse her plate off before placing it in the dishwasher, controlling his call in ways Evan never could. He dressed in the same cutoff jeans and dirty Stimulust Package

T-shirt every day, and didn’t seem to give a shit about the rat’s nest he called his hair. They had nothing in common and barely greeted each other, let alone connected the way Char and Burns did.

Pebbles and Leaves fought constantly, but they were also related.

Evan wrote it off to sibling rivalry. With Wind, another powerful air caller like Dixon, Evan did notice how the two of them never fought.

In fact, Burns and Char never fought and neither did Evan with Pipe.

Interesting.

Dixon pointed at the kitchen’s back door that led to the Farm’s training center. “End of discussion. Unless you want me to call, I advise you to get started.”

The group groaned and bitched as they shuffled off outside.

Something Dixon had been doing with them since taking each and every one of them in, his drills usually started at six a.m. and went on for two grueling hours. They were getting a late start today, which meant they’d all be at it for half the day.
